INFORMATIVE, INSPIRING FOR ADVERTISING CAREER HOPEFULS … and much more! by ! Betty Dravis
I didn’t know Ms. Paetro was an advertising pro until I looked her up with the intention of doing a recommendation GUIDE for her fiction books. In case you don’t know, she’s the co-author of two of James Patterson’s best books, 4th of July and The Fifth Horseman. (I’m happy to hear she’s co-authoring his next release, also … which pleases me since I’m her biggest fan and think she enhances his writing.) Now don’t get me wrong, Patterson is awesome and stands alone without any help, but there’s something that clicks for me when Paetro gets into the mix.

But getting back to this “how-to” book, it’s a real help to anyone desiring a career in advertising. It’s interesting to hear the anecdotes Ms. Paetro tells from her own experience and to learn from a real “pro” who excels in so many areas of writing.

Want a good job? You need a good book. This one! by Bruce H. Bendinger
There are now a number of good books on getting a job in the advertising business.
This is the classic - it contains the core good advice you need to get started on your portfolio (aka you “book,” sample book, mini-book, etc.) for a job in the “creative” department of an advertising agency - or some other type of marketing communications firm (i.e. web site, in-house department, sales promo, event marketing, branding company, etc.).
In addition to the you-absolutely-have-to-know-this-period-no-further-discussion information inside this book, there are “good advice” essays from some of the absolute top people in the ad profession.
These days, you probably need more than one good book to help you get your book together - and maybe some time at a portfolio or design school (we talk about them, too), but this is the one to get you started.

PPS. This book was the first. There are now a number of other books on getting a job in advertising, and most of them are pretty good, too. But a lot of them assume you’ve read this one.

A “creative” book by a non-creative by Neil Helsper, author of "Creative Rockstar: How to Break Into Advertising by Breaking the Rules"
Early on in “How to Put Your Book Together…,” Maxine Paetro says, “I have never written a word of advertising copy, nor have I designed an ad, or come up with an advertising idea.” Much of this book bears that out. While Paetro gives a good account of what HR directors look for, I was missing the down-and-dirty truth and creative advice that an actual copywriter or art director would provide. And since the vast majority of ad agencies don’t employ a non-creative gatekeeper like Paetro–creative directors just look at your portfolio themselves–it seems ridiculous to take the author’s advice too seriously. Like most students I relied on this book during my job search, but now that I’ve been in the industry a few years, I’ve realized there are better resources out there (Luke Sullivan’s superb “Hey Whipple…” among them). If you really want to be a writer or art director, get advice from people who’ve actually been in your shoes.

An invaluable guide for would-be creatives by T. Perrotti
I am a fiction writer who also wants to write ad copy. I got this book on the recommendation of a professional copywriter and have been glad I did ever since. The book offers sage advice, a comforting hand, and many amusing anecdotes from both Ms. Paetro (herself an advertising professional) and several of the industry’s stars.

It has informed and inspired me. It has answered questions that troubled me and others I didn’t even know I had. It even includes an address to contact Ms. Paetro at for advice-something I’ve done a couple times.

If you want to get into advertising, I highly recommend this book.

Great information, horrible book design by d2mo
I found this book to be really helpful - what to put, and what NOT to put, in an advertising portfolio; creative and unusual résumé concepts; and all of the insights delivered in a very realistic manner. What is very off-putting is the interior book design. The entire book is set in a HUMONGOUS point size that just screams at you from every page, plus the amateurish illustrations are cheezy. If you can get beyond the aesthetic oddity of the book interior, the information within is quite useful for aspiring art directors. Equally helpful for students just starting out, or for those endeavoring to make a career change.

I sold Real Estate in the Detroit Metro area back in 1978, it was a tough market back then, left Real Estate for an Engineering position after two years. I have worked for this company that follows every business fad that comes along. Seven years ago we re-engineered and we Engineers had to be jacks and/or jills of all professions (Marketing, Accounting, Engineering, Administration etc….). At first many of us were scared and afraid to sell or market anything. It had been 20 years since I sold Real Estate but I looked at my old selling manuals and nothing seemed to help. I read about Ralph Roberts in a local paper here in Macomb County and went right to his office and purchased his book. This book has helped me sell over a Million dollars worth of Product and I am the No. # 1 Salesperson for our Company. This book is not only about about selling Real Estate but about preparing and being mentally ready to make sales, I’ve fallen in love with selling again. Great Reminder! by
Although this information can be fairly obvious - it is often overlooked. This quick and easy reference can be thumbed through in order to gain new a new approach regularly. Doing the same thing day in and day out makes you very regimeneted but this book helps the creative juices to flow.

“…Sell Like a Madman” revisited by Stephen
I read Ralph Roberts’ previous book, “Walk Like a Giant, Sell Like A Madman” prior to reading this one. I found the information much the same, but organized differently.

Taken on a week-by-week basis as Mr. Roberts recommends, it could be a useful guide for your business. It’s a basic reminder to us that it’s the little things that count with our existing and future customers.

Good book. I had alread read Sell like a madman by same author and was concerned that this would cover the same info. It had new info and was very easy to read. With 52 chapters I’m planning on reviewing 1 chapter in each of my weekly sales meetings for a year.

You Must Try Out This Concept by Ms. Doo-lots With Little
I read about Gerald Michaelson’s Sun Tzu in the review section of a local daily and I promptly ordered a copy. Reading it was a rich experience and the unique ways in which Gerald Michaelson has combined ideas from the West (which concentrates on the big battle as the way to win) and the East (which aims to win without fighting) is just brilliant.

I went a step ahead and took the book to a company meeting and read aloud a few excerpts, which I felt would be useful for my team. It was an interesting experience for all. The simplicity and various ways with which the concepts and wisdom of East and West can be combined to help you in achieving success, have been explained in a marvelous way. In fact, I have already used some of the sales tactics mentioned in the book.

I give 5 stars to Gerald Michaelson’s Sun Tzu Strategies for Selling and recommend it as `A Must Read’ for anyone involved with Selling.

Just Another Run-of-the-Mill Sales Book Riding on the Sun Tzu Franchise by c.j. Ng (Psycheselling.com)
I read this book with high expectations that a lot of people equate business/ selling with warfare, and I’d like to see if someone can actually draw the correlation.

Unfortunately, while there are a lot of tips on selling, which could have been covered within Selling 101, there is minimal coverage on Sun Tzu’s military strategies here.

The book cover also mentioned abt Customer Relationships, which is not substantially covered in the book as well. I guess by marketing it as what it’s not, it’s bad for customer relationsips too!

How do Michaelson’s books keep getting 5 stars? Does he get all of his friends to rate his lame books as soon as he publishes them? This book was great the first time I read it — when it was called “Sun Tzu for Business.”

A lot of good information in a small, easy to read book

Important info about Dr. Taylor’s own subliminal tapes! by
This book gives a very good explanation of the actual subliminal technology and system used to make subliminal tapes. However, after learning of the hidden affirmations Dr. Taylor uses in all of his subliminal materials I have decided to keep the book for my own reference, but toss out my collection of Dr. Taylor’s tapes. FYI, The visual subliminal on the cover is the word SEX all around the man’s face. Pretty strange to me!

Interesting lack of substance by Michael Arndt
I was interested in this book, looking to see how I could incorporate subliminal messaging in with my NLP skills. It is a quick and fun read and it just didn’t convince me on the effectiveness of subliminal messages. I know they work, I know how they are used, and I believe there is probably better material out there.

FASCINATING by Pieter
A really interesting text for those interested in the power of the subconscious mind and in subliminal communication in general. It explains how subliminal self-help cassettes work and how we are constantly bombarded by subliminal messages. Some parts get a bit too technical perhaps, but then again, professionals will find that valuable. It has certainly opened my mind to the disturbing aspects of advertising and the media, as well as to the great promise of self-improvement & healing via subliminal communication. Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, teachers and holistic/esoteric healers should find this book indispensable.

Too basic but full of examples and references by j4u
This book is too basic if you’re counting on it to earn big bucks. It does touch a few aspects of opening a online auction business - finding the right marketplace, marketing, etc. However, the lessons are too basic which I think most of us already knew it without reading this book.

The biggest benefit of this book is lots of examples & reference. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the book is case studies, resources/reference. So you’re already know how to run online acution business but just lack of information, this is it. If not, better look somewhere else.

I only recommend this book to people who know about online auction business but just don’t have time to collect information themselves. This is an easy solution.

If you’re a small company (or maybe an eBay Power Seller) auctioning online, this book can take you up a level. Also a good book for medium to large companies that want to use online auctions to establish another selling venue and to gain new customers.

This book is quite useful if you want and/or need an overall introduction to the Auction Process both in the Business field and in the private management of eBay auctions.
I used it for understanding how companies organize their e-procurement.In particular this book is among those few dealing with Covisint, which is a common auction platform for automotive brands.
It starts with very simple concepts and classifications of auctions and ends up with real examples. I would rather advise “The Auction-App” only for those who want to get in touch with B2B approach to auctions.It does really worth its price.

I like Meet and Grow Rich by Dale S. Averill
It is a good book on the Masterming group model. It is clearly and simply written. I get more out of books that I enjoy, and this is a pleasure to read, engaging is aterm I’d use to describe it.

In a world of hype advertising where what is claimed so often bears little resemblance to reality, this book (and specifically its book jacket) is a refreshing change. This book delivers exactly what the publisher says. And, delivers very well!

I am a huge believer in the power of mentors, coaches, mastermind groups and the like. In my studies and interviews of peak performers from all walks of life, getting constructive help from others is very often cited as a key to a given peak performer’s success.

Now tons of books have been written on coaching, but there has heretofore been a dearth of books on masterminding. Authors Vitale and Hibbler have wonderfully filled this niche. They have written an interesting and valuable how-to book on assembling and maintaining an effective mastermind group. Especially valuable for the self-employed who are void of the valuable networking often provided by the traditional corporate workplace.

Caveat emptor: If you looking for a deep psychological treatise on exactly how masterminding works neurologically, this is NOT the book. But, if you want a nuts and bolts guide to masterminding, this book rocks. Exactly as advertised by the publisher! How refreshing, and useful.

We are the product of the half dozen people with whom we spend the most time. Assemble and maintain the right mastermind group and one can’t help but to be more successful. This book will show you how to make that happen.
